The drilling mud decanter centrifuge driven
by VFD will give many benefits to the clients. The adjustable bowl speed and differential
speed allows the operators to set the right G force and solids pushing speed
according to the drilling mud conditions.

To design the VFD Control Panel, the
contractor needs the power supply specifications. Normally it is 460V/60HZ for
USA standard or 380V/50HZ for Europe and China standard. Than the pulley size
of the motor and bowl side will decide the bowl driving speed at different
frequency. After confirming the bowl speed formula, the contractor needs the
formula for calculation of the differential speed. For GN Decanter centrifuge,
the Sun-Wheel gear box ration is 57:1. So the differential speed will be the
bowl speed minus the gearbox input speed and divided by 57.

For the VFD Control panel, there is
different explosion proof standard. In China, it is CN Explosion proof which is
close to IEC Ex standard. In Europe, it is ATEX Explosion proof. And in North
America, the explosion proof standard is UL for USA, and CSA for Canada.

For normal design shale shaker, the clean
fluids discharged from the bottom of shale shaker. Fluids side discharge shale
shaker is a kind of shale shaker that the clean fluids after separation will be
discharged from both side of the shale shaker. It is widely used in many
countries, like Iran, UAE, Nigeria, Brazil, Argentina, etc…

Features of Fluids side discharge shale
shaker

For normal shale shaker, the fluids can only
be discharged to the tank under the shale shaker. Customs should use pump if
they want to transfer mud from shaker tank to other tanks. In case there are
heavy mud settle at the tank bottom, the shaker should be stop for tank
cleaning.

With side discharge shale shaker, the fluids
can be discharged from both side of the shaker deck, jobsite people can use
trough to lead the fluids to other tanks or other place, no need extra pump.

why need Fluids side discharge shale shaker

For example, during well cementation jobs,
operators will inject cement to the rig hole to reinforce the well wall, new
drilling fluids in need in this process, but there are still drilling fluids in
the well hole. With Fluids side discharge shale shaker, fluids from shaker can
be leaded to other place or other systems for treatment, rather than fall down
to the shaker tank.

Desander & Desilter mud cleaner: Shale
shaker is the 1rst stage solids control equipment. After shale shaker, the
fluids will be transfer to desander or desilter separation by centrifugal pump.

Barite recovery decanter centrifuge: it is
the application of middle speed decanter centrifuge to recovery barite from
solids control system, and the recovered barite can be reused in the system.

Jet mud mixing system: it is used to mixing
new drilling mud. And barite recovered from decanter centrifuge also added to
the hopper of jet mud mixer and come to the system again.

Pumps: Different feeding pumps for desander,
desilter and decanter centrifugal, mixing pump, trip pump, charging pump, etc…

Introduction of mud gun in mud tank system

Mud gun is widely used in mud tank system. It is normally mounted at tank corner. Its function is to agitating drilling mud, and avoid the solids phase in drilling mud from settling down, and keep an equal weight of the mud. Mud gun can also be used to transfer mud from tank to tank or from compartment to compartment.

There are high pressure mud gun and low pressure mud gun used for mud systems. During China brand mud gun, the normal model is 3.2Mpa or 6.4Mpa. The high pressure or lower pressure of mud gun depends on the power source of the mud gun. High pressure mud gun is feeding by mud pump. Its feeding line connected with mud pump flow line. Lower pressure mud mud gun feeding for centrifugal pump. The quantity of mud gun in mud tank system depends on the tank design and tank dimension.  

Applications of Mud gun in mud tank system

There are 2 inch and 3 inch mud mud gun for mud tank system. Both model have fixed design and manual adjustment design for option.

Drilling mud agitator and mud gun in mud tanks

Mud gun is usually used together with drilling mud agitator. Mud agitator is mounted in the middle of the tank compartment. The corners agitator cannot reachable. Mud gun will be used together with mud gun to keep the tank corner mud moveable. GN design mud gun is equipped with 3 nozzles, each nozzle with 120°to each other.  

500bbls tanks is a common size mud tank for oil and gas drilling rigs. I can be used for mud mixing or mud storage. For HDD or CBM drilling, they normally do not use such big size mud tank.

Below is the parameters of GN design 500bbl mud storage tank, it is rectangular Mud Tank built as per API specification Schedule 40:

Mud tank usable capacity: 500 bbls approx.

Compartment quantity: the 500bbls mud tank can be divided into 1~3 compartments (Depends on customer request.). Capacity of each compartment: 250 bbls approx.

Electrical mud agitator model GNJBQ150-DD, with 36" impeller, 2-layer impeller. 20 HP driving motor, 460V – 60 HZ, RPM 1750 or 380V – 50 HZ, RPM 1450.

Inside a solids control system, desander may be the second stage equipment, which removes solids particle size 40-100 nm from drilling liquids. Then your next is desilter getting rid of particle size 16-50nm from drilling liquids. While, cone(also called hydrocyclone) may be the functioning part for desander and desilter. Based on the size cone diameter, cones are called desander cones having a the diameter over 6’’ so that as desilter cones having a diameter under 6’’. Generally, 8’’ and 10’’ cones are generally utilized as desanders 4’’ and 5’’ cones are often utilized as desilters.

In normal operation, feed slurry needs tangentially in to the interior from the cone inside a high-speed, leading to whirlpool effects within the cone. The swirling motion from the slurry drives the bigger and denser contaminants outward from the cone wall for the lower discharge port, as the more compact, lighter contaminants move towards the middle of the cone and venture out with the upper discharge port. The separation of solids from drilling liquids is completed.
